How to Treat a Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium is a mineral found in a variety of foods, particularly leafy green vegetables, such as spinach. Other foods include bananas, avocados, almonds, cashews, legumes, tofu, brown rice or millet. The body uses the magnesium gained from these sources to transport energy, contract or relax muscles and produce proteins. Mild magnesium deficiency symptoms include fatigue, irritability, muscle spasms or memory problems. More severe symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, delirium, numbness or hallucinations.

Tips and Warnings

  • -Magnesium is a component of chlorophyll, which gives green plants their color. Therefore, the darker the greens, the more magnesium they are likely to contain.
  • Your daily magnesium intake from a supplement should not exceed 350 milligrams per day for those nine years of age and older. With foods and supplements combined, a person should not consume more than 1,000 milligrams of magnesium per day.
