Unless you enjoy exercising just for the pure joy of it, you probably have an ulterior motive for spending 45 minutes on a treadmill. If you're exercising as part of a weight loss program, then you're also interested in exactly how many calories you've expended during your hour. Getting an exact count of how many calories you expend while on a motorized treadmill is more complicated than you think. The only true method for determining how many calories you're expending while walking on a treadmill is by being connected to elaborate laboratory equipment. Short of that, there are some pretty good ways to estimate how many calories you burn per minute.
Tips and Warnings
- Always warm-up before beginning to exercise. Try to use the same equipment each exercise period. After several weeks, try increasing the speed or the grade by 10 percent per week.
- Avoid increasing the speed and grade too quickly. Keep in mind that readouts on the treadmill are just estimates.
