In badminton, players hit a shuttle back and forth over a 5-foot net. Each player or doubles team attempts to win points by hitting the shuttle to the surface of the opponent's side of the court within bounds. Players lose points when they hit the shuttle into the net or out of bounds or when the shuttle hits the surface of their own court within bounds. When teaching schoolchildren to play badminton, provide a simplified set of rules for them to follow.

Scoring

You must score 21 points to win a game, and you must win two games to win a match. Players must win games by two points, unless a game reaches 29-all. In that case, the first player or team to reach 30 points wins the game. Players can win points on their own serve and on their opponent's serve.

Serving

A coin toss determines who will serve first. The winner of the toss can choose to serve or receive first, and the other player can decide which side of the court to play on first. The server must serve from the right service court when he has zero points or an even number of points, and from the left service court when he has an odd number of points. If the server wins the rally, he earns a point and continues to serve. If the receiver wins the rally, she earns a point and gets to serve next. The winner of the game gets to serve first in the next game. The server must hit the shuttle underhanded and below the waist, and the serve must travel cross court to the service court diagonally opposite the server.

Doubles

In doubles play, if the serving team wins a rally, that team earns a point and the same server serves again from the other service court. If the receiving team wins a rally, they earn a point and the right to serve. The player who did not serve the last time that team had the serve must serve next. Players on a doubles team change sides of the court only when they win a point on their serve.

Change of Ends

Players change ends of the court after each game and after one side reaches 11 points in the third game.
