5 Things You Need to Know About Bike Frames

1. Frame of Reference

The frame is the main component of a bicycle to which manufacturers attach all other elements. The most basic design is a "diamond" frame and consists of two triangular shapes created by welding tubes together. The triangles share a tube that runs from the seat down to the pedals of the bike. The front triangle supports the handlebars and the front fork of the bike, attached to the front wheel. The back triangle includes attached rear tire, chain and gears if the bike has them.

2. The Material World

While most bike frames share the same general design, but not the same materials. Frames are most commonly made of steel. A true steel frame is rather heavy and can rust but generally lasts for a long time. An aluminum alloy is another good steel frame that is a bit lighter and won't rust but can wear out more quickly. If you're willing to spend more money you may want to get a titanium or carbon fiber frame. Both of these materials are light, strong and durable, but more labor-intensive to make and therefore more expensive.

3. The Right Fit

Frame measurements determine the size of a bike. Seat tube length is used to state the bike's size. Recently, bike manufactures have taken into account not only the height but also the length of the frame determined by the top tube connecting the seat to the handlebars. Bike manufacturers are beginning to consider more than just a rider's height and are creating more proportional frames.

4. Made to Order

If you're serious about getting the perfect look and fit, you can have a custom bicycle frame made specifically for you. You can request the specific size and material for your frame based on the type of riding you do. In addition, you can also choose how to attach other elements to your frame, the best positioning of your seat and pedals, and of course the color that best suits your taste. Custom made frames are more expensive but make for the most efficient and comfortable riding.

5. Beyond the Ordinary

If you want to make a serious statement with your bike frame there are some extraordinary elements to choose from. In addition to the more common materials, choose bamboo and other types of wood for creating your frame. The real eye-catcher, though, is in the frame design. Some frames have thrown the diamond out the door and opted for hearts, loops, and even added elements to hold your laptop during your morning commute. As long as you can attach two wheels, pedals, a seat and handlebars, with a little work your frame can be as unique as you want.
