You are never too young to take skin care seriously. Environmental irritants, sun exposure and internal biological processes impact your dermal health regardless of age, ethnicity or gender. The California-based International Dermal Institute -- IDI -- formulated its Dermalogica brand skin care products to suit a variety of skin types, skin health conditions and specialized needs.

History

British skin therapist and founder of IDI, Jane Wurwand, came to the United States in the 1980s and came to the conclusion that the American aesthetics industry was lacking in skin and body therapy education. Wurwand also felt that the existing skin care products were focused on beauty rather than skin health. Wurwand developed her own line of Dermalogica skin health products free of dyes, fragrances, lanolin, mineral oil and alcohol, available only through IDI's trained skin therapists.

Face Mapping

Dermalogica products are developed to resolve skin health issues. Skin analysis, or "skin mapping," is the first step in determining the skin's condition. Therapists conduct skin mapping analysis at authorized Dermalogica skin care treatment centers. Individuals can also "speed map" their skin using an interactive tool available on the Dermalogica website.

Dermalogica's skin mapping process separates the facial area into fourteen zones. Each zone is carefully examined for problems such as breakouts, dehydration, hyperpigmentation and congestion.

The online speed map tool is a less extensive, two-step process. The tool divides the face into five analysis zones: forehead, eyes, cheeks, upper lip and neck. Once a primary skin concern is selected the online tool offers a choice of alternatives that narrows the problem further. Based on this quick analysis, the tool recommends the appropriate Dermalogica skin care regimen.

Skin Care Regimens

Dermalogica's skin care regimens specify the products needed to improve and maintain healthy facial skin. Depending on skin type and condition, regimens can include cleansers to remove dirt and other impurities, toners to refresh or calm the skin, exfoliants to slough off dead skin cells, moisturizering skin conditioners and products specifically targeted to problems such as acne, dry skin, fine lines, pigmentation and surface damage.

As of January 2011, most Dermalogica skin care products, purchased full-size and à la carte, cost from $31 to $56. Dermalogica also offers Skincare Essentials Kits -- travel-sized versions of complete skin care regimens -- at similar costs.

Normal Skin Essentials Kits

Demalogica offers two kits for people with normal skin: normal/dry and normal/oily. The company recommends the normal/dry kit for people with healthy skin and a few dry spots. The kit contains a 1.7-oz. bottle of soap-free, gentle cleansing gel; a 1.7-oz. spritzer of multi-active toner that refreshes, hydrates and smooths skin; a .75-oz. tube of skin smoothing cream that moisturizes and protects; a 3-oz. tube of gentle cream exfoliant with fruit enzymes to remove dead skin cells; a .75-oz. tube of climate control lip treatment; an eye makeup remover sample; and a hydrating masque sample.

Dermalogica recommends the normal/oily kit for people with healthy skin and oily patches. In addition to a 1.7-oz. bottle of soap-free, gentle cleansing gel, a 1.7-oz. spritzer of multi-active toner and a .75-oz. tube of climate control lip treatment, the kit contains a .75-tube of Active Moist oil-free moisturizer; a .75-oz. tube of natural exfoliating skin prep scrub; and samples of eye makeup remover and hydrating masque.

Dry Skin Essentials Kit

Dermalogica's kit for dry skin contains a 2-oz. jar of essential cleansing solution; a 1.7 oz. spritzer of multi-active toner; a 3-oz. tube of gentle cream exfoliant; a .75-oz. tube of climate control lip treatment; and a .75-oz tube of intensive moisture balance that reduces the appearance of fine lines by rebalancing the skin's moisture levels and repairing signs of aging.

Oily Skin Essentials Kit

Oily skin requires special handling to remove excess emollients without overdrying. Dermalogica's oily skin kit contains a 1.7-oz. tube of dermal clay cleanser to remove excess oils and refine skin texture; a 1.7-oz. spritzer of multi-active toner;
a .75-oz. tube of oil control lotion; a .75-oz. tube of natural exfoliating skin prep scrub; a .75-oz. tube of climate control lip treatment; and samples of eye makeup remover and hydrating masque.
