A weight loss coach works with you to help you achieve weight loss goals. In addition to providing fitness and nutrition information, weight loss coaches motivate and encourage clients. While some schools offer weight loss coaching programs, other people self-train to work as weight loss coaches.

Requirements

There is no government licensing system for weight loss coaches in the United States. Anyone can bill herself as a weight loss coach without completing formal training. Some online programs offer certificates in weight loss coaching, although certification is not necessary to work as a weight loss coach. A certificate in life or wellness coaching also qualifies you to perform weight loss coaching.

Education

Many weight loss coaches have academic backgrounds in nutritional science or personal training. Weight loss coaching requires knowledge of nutrition, personal fitness, counseling and basic medicine. A degree in nursing, health psychology, exercise science or counseling is suitable academic training for a career in weight loss coaching, although no formal degree is required. Weight loss coaching certificate programs may take from three months to three years to complete.

Self-Training

Training yourself to become a weight loss coach requires you to learn about basic health and fitness. Read college-level textbooks about nutrition, physiology, exercise science and psychology. Learn about healthy food choices, aerobic exercise plans, weightlifting techniques and safe dietary supplements. Weight loss coaches must also motivate clients to succeed, so learn basic counseling or psychological techniques to respond positively to your clients' needs. Textbooks, online resources, workshops and professional groups are excellent ways to gain expertise.

Considerations

Consider shadowing a weight loss coach or completing supervised training. An experienced weight loss professional can provide insights about your approach and style, making you a more effective coach. Be upfront with your clients regarding your credentials, and understand your limitations as a weight loss coach. Only licensed professionals may diagnose illnesses or prescribe pharmacological treatment.
