Almost half of the shots you play in a round of golf likely will take place on the green. Because performance on the greens is so vital to your score, it pays to have a high-quality putter. Manufacturers are always developing new ways to improve the consistency and feel of putters as well as making them easier to aim. Aesthetics are also important when it comes to putting. If you look down at a putter and feel full of confidence, you are far more likely to hole the putt.

Odyssey

The Odyssey White Ice series of putters received the gold rating in the "GolfDigest" 2010 Equipment Hot List, receiving top marks in performance, innovation and demand. The White Ice Series feature a multimaterial insert that was created with direct feedback from PGA Tour players. With the help of the professional golfers, the insert was engineered to improve "sound, responsiveness and consistency." There are 21 different models to choose from, nine of which feature Odyssey's two-ball design for improved alignment.

TaylorMade

TaylorMade's Rossa Ghost stands out from other putters because of its white putter head. TaylorMade claims that the white head reduces glare in sunlight as well as improving visibility in the shade. Putting expert Dave Stockton agrees that the white head offers benefits, stating that "the easiest putter to see is the easiest putter to align." The Rossa Ghost was used by Justin Rose to win twice on the PGA Tour in 2010. The putter face of the Rossa Ghost features 12 CNC milled grooves to improve roll over the first few feet and improve control.

Scotty Cameron

Scotty Cameron putters have been the number one putters on the PGA Tour since 1997. The Scotty Cameron Studio Select putters are "precision milled" from 303 stainless steel. They feature circular heel-toe weights, which improve forgiveness by reducing head rotation on mishit putts. The Studio Select putters also feature a higher toe profile, designed to reduce the tendency to lift the toe and shut the face when addressing the ball. There are a wide variety of different Studio Select models to suit different players and for those who prefer more weight in a putter, Scotty Cameron also offers the option of a heavier putter head.

Others

Yes! putters all feature patented C-Groove technology. Upward slanting grooves on the putter face help to lift the ball at impact, which reduces skidding and gets the ball rolling sooner. The Yes! Mollie putter is a flanged-blade design milled from 303 stainless steel that received a silver rating in the "GolfDigest" 2010 Equipment Hot List. Rife putters employ RollGroove Technology. Precision milled grooves are precisely spaced in order to "grip, hold and release" the ball down the target line. The impact conditions created by the grooves help to improve roll by reducing skidding. Rife's top of the line range of putters is the IBF Tour series, which was inspired by Ian Baker Finch, one of the best putters of all time.
