SRF, or the Self Realization Fellowship, was founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda. Yogananda started the organization to make the teachings of Kriya Yoga, a method to attain the union of breath and soul, more available. Kriya yoga is only truly understood through practice.

Kriya Yoga

Kriya yoga consists of body discipline, mental control, and meditating on the sound "Aum", according to Paramahansa Yogananda, in his book, Autobiography of a Yogi. Yogananda also states that you must learn the techniques of Kriya yoga from an authorized Kriya yogi from the Self Realization Fellowship. The website for the Self Realization Fellowship does offer some online guided meditations.

Hong-Sau Technique of Concentration

In a seated position with the eyes closed, concentrate on the midway point between the eyebrows. Inhale slowly, counting to eight. Hold for eight and then exhale for eight. Repeat three to six times. On the next inhale, say "hong" and the following exhale say "sau", pronounced "saw". Continue as long as you would like. Hong-Sau means "I am spirit".

Double Breathing

Double breathing is considered one of the energizing techniques in kriya yoga. Start with a short inhale, followed by a long inhale, filling up your lungs completely. Then exhale with a short exhale, followed by a long exhale, making the sound "huh" first, then "huhhhhhhhh". Repeat as necessary.

Body Recharging

While standing, inhale slowly and tense the whole body. Gaze upwards, towards the point between the eyebrows. Hold the tension for a few seconds. On the exhale, slowly relax. Repeat this exercise one to three times.
