Skin disorders, such as eczema, can be significant sources of frustration for those who live with these conditions. The term "eczema" actually refers to a group of skin problems categorized as dermatitis, also known simply as an itchy rash. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may be helpful in treating eczema and other skin conditions. If you have a deficiency of essential fatty acids, you may experience symptoms including dry skin and scaliness. It's important to speak with your doctor before using any dietary supplement. You can also add to your diet foods that are rich in essential fatty acids.
Step 1
Eat fatty fish such as mackerel and salmon at least twice a week. Mayo Clinic explains that eating fatty fish provides essential fatty acids that have several potential health benefits -- lowering triglycerides, reducing blood pressure and helping decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, the University of Maryland Medical Center cites a 2004 study that found individuals who had a form of dermatitis that worsened with sun exposure had less sensitivity to UV-rays when taking omega-3 supplements.
Step 2
Take an essential fatty acid supplement, available at your local health food store. If it's not convenient to eat fish or it's just not to your liking, taking supplemental essential fatty acids may be a good alternative. A 2008 study cited by Health Information Resources found that participants with eczema reported relief of their symptoms with a daily dose of essential fatty acids.
Step 3
Add a teaspoon of flaxseed oil or a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to salad or cereal once a day. This will provide you with the minimum recommended daily requirement for omega-3 fatty acids. Cooking flaxseed damages the essential fatty acids, rendering them ineffective. Omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in leafy green vegetables and many oils, are necessary in your diet, along with omega-3s. However, most people already consume more omega-6 fatty acids than the recommended daily amount. Together, the essential fatty acids can help treat the dry skin, itching and redness that occur with eczema.
Step 4
Apply a moisturizer that contains essential fatty acids. Use it several times a day. You can find several different brands of moisturizers that contain essential fatty acids at your local health food store. People who have eczema should keep their skin moisturized to help decrease drying and cracks in the skin. Apply the moisturizer after washing your hands and after showering. Be sure to choose a moisturizer that does not contain alcohol or heavy fragrances, because these can make eczema symptoms worse.
