Zantrex or Zantrex-3 is an over-the-counter weight loss and energy supplement that is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Among its ingredients is xanthine (the primary agent in caffeine). Thus, individuals who are highly sensitive to caffeine, have hypertension (high blood pressure) or cardiac conditions should not take this supplement. Pregnant women also should not take Zantrex because of the caffeine content. Some possible side effects do exist.
Gastrointestinal
The caffeine in Zantrex may lead to gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea and general stomach discomfort. Such side effects may subside, but do not ignore these symptoms if they persist. Continued diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Thus, seek medical attention if any of these effects continue.
Cardiac
This substance has several potential cardiovascular side effects. Specifically, this supplement may increase heart rate and cause irregular heartbeats or palpitations. Additionally, an increase in blood pressure may result. Thus, as mentioned previously, if you have a medical history of cardiovascular disease you should not take this supplement because of the effects of caffeine. People taking this supplement should reduce or limit their intake of caffeinated beverages.
Urological
Caffeine can act as a mild diuretic; therefore, Zantrex may increase frequency of urine output. Consequently, if you have a medical history of kidney disease or renal problems you should consult a physician before taking this substance.
Nervousness
The caffeine content in Zantrex may produce effects that induce nervousness including jitters, sleep problems and irritability. Changes in mood may occur as well as increased feelings of anxiety or panic. If you have anxiety or mood disorders check with your physician before taking this supplement.
