Alcoholism is a disease that results in the total loss of control over alcohol, but you can regain control of your addiction by entering into an alcohol rehabilitation program. Healing begins with ridding your body of the toxins. The process of detoxification is not easy and the effects often make you feel awful. However, detoxification is necessary to rid yourself of the problems alcoholism can bring into your life.

Step 1

Research recovery centers that can help you with detoxification. When you are ready to overcome your addiction to alcohol, researching various inpatient recovery centers. Detoxification must occur within the confines of a medical facility with trained health care professionals due to the violent reaction of your body as the detoxification process begins, explains MayoClinic.com. Focus on the services it offers, how much it costs, whether your insurance will cover any or all of your stay and how long your stay will be.

Step 2

Schedule your arrival at the inpatient recovery center. Once you find a facility you are comfortable with, call them and set an arrival date. Give the facility any information it requires beforehand, such as your financial status, medical history and the specifics of the alcohol addiction you are trying to overcome. This helps the facility prepare ahead of time for you.

Step 3

Take prescription medication to help you with your withdrawal symptoms from alcohol. During the detox process, the doctor monitoring you at the facility will decide if certain medications is right for you. Some medications, such as tranquilizers, help prevent insomnia and seizures while your body detoxes, and help relax your muscles. The doctor may also prescribe a mild sedative that works on your central nervous system and also helps prevent seizures from occurring.

Step 4

Eat the food the facility prepares for you. Most inpatient facilities have nutritionists who plan meals for patients. Although you may not have an appetite, it is important to eat properly while detoxifying. SpencerRecoveryCenters states that proper nourishment of your body is part of a successful alcohol detox.

Step 5

Go to your group meetings and counseling sessions. Detoxification is an emotional time and it brings you face-to-face with the reasons for your addiction, all you might have lost because of it and all you are going through to overcome it. While in the facility, you will meet privately with a counselor, attend group meetings and undergo family therapy. Once leaving the facility you can continue this by joining support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
