Vitamins are an essential part of a healthy body, aiding in functions from immunity to helping fight off disease. But some vitamins could also play an integral role in fighting the battle of the bulge by helping to curb your appetite and increasing your metabolism. Specific vitamins, such as most B vitamins, folic acid and zinc, may help reduce those pesky numbers on the scale more than others.

Thyroid

Instability in the thyroid gland could lead to changes in body weight. One of the many functions of the thyroid is to regulate appetite. Both riboflavin and niacin aid in healthy thyroid function, helping to curb hunger through stabilizing the hormones produced in the thyroid gland.

Blood Sugar Levels

The Vitamins and Health Supplement Guide states that folic acid and zinc can help regulate appetite while a combination of B vitamins can help metabolize protein and fat and stabilize blood sugar levels. Balanced blood glucose levels help to reduce hunger between meals and help stabilize appetite. Niacin also helps to regulate blood sugar, which can help reduce food cravings.

Locating Vitamins

Vitamins can be taken in tablet or capsule form or can be found in certain foods. If you wish to take a vitamin supplement, you may consider a multivitamin or a supplement of specific vitamins such as a B-complex vitamin that contains vitamin B1, vitamin B3, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. Many foods are rich in specific vitamins as well. For example, if you wish to increase consumption of vitamin B6, you should consume chicken, bananas or sweet potatoes.

Considerations

Although specific vitamins may help to reduce appetite and regulate metabolism, other factors are necessary in reducing body weight. A healthy, balanced diet that includes lean meats, foods rich in fiber and whole grains along with regular exercise is the first step in leading a healthy life and maintaining an optimum body weight. Vitamin supplements can help to ensure that you are consuming the daily recommended amount of essential vitamins and minerals, further increasing well-being.

Warning

Over-consumption of many vitamins can have adverse effects and may even be fatal. High levels of riboflavin and niacin may cause nausea and vomiting. Overdose of folic acid can cause kidney damage and nausea. High levels of zinc may cause nausea, vomiting, seizures, insomnia, prostatitis and anemia. Talk to your doctor or other health care provider about recommended doses of vitamins and possible side effects.
