Viagra is a popular male enhancement medication, available by prescription. The drug is beneficial for men who are unable to attain an erection, though it is not an aphrodisiac, as many assume. For men looking for natural alternatives to Viagra, many options exist that can help treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction while also offering aphrodisiac effects, stimulating the sex drive. L-arginine, yohimbe and gingko are alternatives to Viagra that may work as well as the popular drug, although no formula is exactly equal.

L-arginine

L-arginine, a natural alternative to Viagra, is used to treat erectile dysfunction. According to the Mayo Clinic, L-arginine is thought to work much like Viagra, by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide in the body, relaxing muscles that surround blood vessels supplying blood to the penis. You can find L-arginine supplements over-the-counter at pharmacies or health food stores. However, research is pending. Side effects may be nausea, abdominal cramping, diarrhea and low blood pressure.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe, derived from the bark of African evergreen trees, is also an herbal remedy used to treat a variety of conditions. Modern uses for yohimbe include sexual enhancement, and much like Viagra, the herb is thought to increase blood flow to the genitals, assisting with erections. While the amount of yohimbe found in dietary supplements may vary (some containing very little), a standardized form of yohimbe is sold by prescription for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.

Gingko

Gingko, an herb used by the Chinese for thousands of years, is derived from the familiar Asian gingko tree. Traditionally, the herb was used to improve blood flow, longevity and enhance sexual performance. According to the Mayo Clinic, ginkgo may help with erectile dysfunction by improving blood flow to the penis, similarly to the way Viagra works. However, the blood thinning effects of gingko may be dangerous for individuals on certain medications. Check with your doctor before beginning an herbal regimen.
