Spirulina is a blue algae native to the salty waters of Africa, Central America and Asia. It contains approximately 65 percent protein, significant amounts of vitamins, particularly A, B and E, amino acids, omega-6 and a well-researched protein called C-phycocyanin. Spirulina also contains iron, manganese, selenium, zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium. If you consider taking spirulina for a particular medical condition, talk to your doctor first.
Iron
Many plants contain iron. In many cases, however, this mineral is not absorbed well in the human body. Spirulina contains high amounts of iron that has high bioavailability. For example, 10 g spirulina powder provides up to 2 g absorbable iron, the equivalent of a daily dose of ferrous sulfate, the iron tablets used for treating anemia. Iron is found in your blood and muscle cells.
Manganese
Manganese is a trace mineral also found in spirulina. Manganese is found in the body in small quantities in your bones, kidneys, liver and pancreas. Your body needs manganese because it participates in the production of enzymes, helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels and thyroid function.
Selenium
Selenium is found in small amounts in the body, but it has important roles. Selenium works synergistically with vitamin E, and both are available in spirulina. Selenium and vitamin E have antioxidant properties and help protect the body's cells from being damaged by free radicals. Adequate levels of selenium may prevent prostate, colon and lung cancers.
Zinc
Zinc is a mineral that helps promote a proper immune system and has antioxidant qualities. It works closely with vitamin A and E, both found in spirulina. This mineral promotes healthy reproductive organs, and is especially good for the prostate. Supplementation with zinc in doses up to 100 mg daily helps boost the immune system and repair wounds.
Calcium
Calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth. It also plays a key role in muscle and nerve functions. Adequate levels of calcium prevents osteoporosis, high blood pressure and colon cancer.
Potassium
This mineral helps maintain balanced fluid levels in the body and controls blood pressure. Like calcium and magnesium, potassium also supports optimal nerve and muscle functions.
Magnesium
Magnesium is an essential mineral found in abundance in the body. Magnesium helps promote healthy growth of the bones and proper function of the nerves and muscles. Adequate amounts of magnesium in the body may prevent migraines, premenstrual syndrome and high blood pressure.
