Hanging from a pull-up bar and pulling your body up toward the bar is the basic pull-up exercise. Pull ups use your body weight to create resistance and build strength in your upper body. Master the basic pull up and you are ready to try some variations on the pull up to target specific upper body muscles. Install a pull up bar on your ceiling or wall to start increasing your strength.
Step 1
Move a stud finder over the wall or ceiling to locate the wall studs or the ceiling joists. Where you choose to mount the pull-up bar depends on the unit you purchased. Mark the joists or studs with masking or painter's tape so as not to damage the drywall.
Step 2
Find a place to install your pull-up bar on the ceiling by choosing a ceiling joist at least 3 feet from any wall. This distance will give you enough space to use your pull-up bar without interference. When mounting the bar on the wall, select a point at least 10 inches and no more than 22 inches from the ceiling.
Step 3
Mark the mounting location on the wall or ceiling by placing the mounting brackets on the wall and ceiling at the site you have chosen. Use a pencil to mark the pull-up bar mounting holes on the joists or studs.
Step 4
Drill 3/16-inch pilot holes in the ceiling joists or wall studs at your pull-up bar installation site using a 3/16-inch wooden drill bit. Place the mounting brackets against the wall or ceiling and secure them with 1/4-inch lag bolts, driving the bolts into the studs or joists with a socket adaptor installed in your power drill.
Step 5
Insert the bar into the mounting brackets. Secure the bar in the brackets following the directions provided by the manufacturer.
