While belly dancing was once a mysterious and exotic method of self expression, today, classes are featured at a variety of gyms, fitness clubs and dance studios across the United States. If you've recently registered for such a class, you may not know what it necessary as a costume or uniform while dancing. While some students will wear comfortable exercise clothes, others may come to class in full belly dance gear. The only important necessary component is a hip sash and your own comfort.
Tops and Bottoms
When you go to a belly dancing class, you'll notice a wide variety of costumes and fitness gear. A well-fitting bra is key as a foundation to your costume. Clothes that are comfortable, flexible and breathable will help you with fluid movements and transitions. Whether you choose to wear a pair of yoga pants or you purchase a traditional belly dancing skirt, you should be able to move your hips and legs freely. While more experienced belly dancers choose to bare their midriffs during class, you needn't show your belly in order to participate. A longer tank top or shirt is fine. Look for form-fitting clothes so your instructor can see your body and form.
Hip Sash
The Ethnic Dance Expressions website notes that a hip sash is one of the most important pieces of clothing for belly dancing. Hip sashes can be any gauzy piece of material that fits around your waist, whether you purchase one from a specialty store or make your own. The importance of a hip sash is multiplied if you happen to choose more concealing shirts as your workout tops. Since your instructor cannot see your belly, she'll use your sash as a way to watch the movement of your hips to ensure proper form. Adding bells to your sash can help you concentrate on the movement of your hips.
Footwear
Belly dancing footwear is a personal preference. Your instructor may have certain footwear preferences, so calling ahead to find out what most students wear can save you some discomfort. In general, bare feet and jazz shoes are common, as socks can slide on the floor, according to the Nazeem Allayl Belly Dance Studio in Atlanta, Georgia. Tennis shoes aren't recommended, as they can inhibit the movement of the foot and ruin the aesthetic of the belly dance.
Accessories
Depending on the scope of your belly dancing class, you may be asked to bring in props and accessories to use with your typical workout clothes. Finger cymbals may be used to create sound and movement in the hands. Silk scarves are also used for certain exercises, and they create an authentic aura for students. Ask your instructor for a list of equipment needed throughout the course so you can be prepared for different classes and techniques.
