Your immune system is a large network of cells, tissues and organs that helps fight off disease-causing microorganisms and coordinates the healing process. A weak immune system increases your susceptibility to every type of illness. Although certain medicinal herbs may improve your immune function, you should always check with your physician to learn which herbs are most appropriate for you and your condition.

Immune Disorders

According to Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," proper immune function is an intricate balancing act. Although insufficient immunity increases your likelihood of developing an infectious illness, notes Balch, you may also become sick if your immune response is too robust or directed at healthy tissues. White blood cells play an important role in all aspects of your immunity and are your body's first line of defense.

Medicinal Herbs

Many medicinal herbs can have beneficial effects on your immune system. Some herbs help generate anticancer cells in your body while other herbs help cleanse your blood and lymph. Still other herbs directly enhance your immune function. Medicinal herbs for your immune system include astragalus, bayberry, fenugreek, hawthorn, horehound, licorice root, red clover, black radish, dandelion, milk thistle, ginseng, suma, wisteria, echinacea, ginkgo, goldenseal, ligustrum, picrorrhiza and St. John's wort.

A Popular Herb

Red clover is a popular medicinal herb for your immune system. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that red clover may help treat cancer, respiratory problems and other ailments. Red clover purportedly enhances your immune response, and it has sedative and blood- thinning effects. Red clover is a plant that grows in certain parts of North America and Europe. The flowers of the red clover plant are used in herbal preparations.

Considerations

A multifaceted approach to building immune system health may be more effective than using herbs alone. Consult with your physician to discuss all treatment options for increasing your immune function, including the potential risks and benefits associated with each treatment, treatment dosage and duration and what drug interactions might occur when taking dietary supplements. Medicinal herbs for your immune system may exert powerful effects on your body and should be used with great caution.
