Low carbohydrate diets are one of the most popular ways to lose weight quickly, and there is research to support this popularity. A study published in the July 17, 2008, edition of the New England Journal of Medicine found that low-carb diets produced a greater weight loss than low-fat diets and Mediterranean diets over the same two-year period. Food manufacturers have released low-carb candy, chocolate and various other products marketed as a way to eat junk food and still lose weight. Unfortunately, most of these unhealthy products are still high in saturated and trans fat. Low-carb diets can be an effective way to lose weight, but only when used as part of a healthy eating plan.
Tips and Warnings
- Focus on lower-sugar fruits such as berries and apples instead of higher sugar fruits such as bananas, pineapple and mangos. High quality vegetable sources include spinach and broccoli. Include exercise in your plan to burn extra calories and improve overall health. The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends adults exercise at least two-and-a-half hours a week. If weight loss stalls, increasing exercise times can be a way to bust through the plateau.
- Always consult a physician before starting any diet or exercise plan.
