Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are bacterial infections of the urinary tract, which includes the urethra, bladder and kidneys. UTIs can be extremely painful causing abdominal and lower back cramping and an uncomfortable burning sensation during urination. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, women are 10 times more likely to develop a UTI, primarily due to their anatomy. Treatment of a UTI includes the use of antibiotics, pain medicine and a diet that reduces further irritation of the urinary tract.

Cranberries and Blueberries

Fruits, such as cranberries and blueberries may help you to reduce the symptoms caused by a UTI. Cranberries and blueberries are rich in antioxidants, and they may also reduce the interaction between the offending bacteria and your urinary tract. The potential benefits of these berries can be gained by eating whole fruit, drinking juice or taking dietary supplements. The University of Michigan Health System recommends that you get 4 to 6 oz. of cranberry juice, or 400 mg of cranberry extract per day to help alleviate your UTI symptoms.

Low-Sugar Foods

Foods that are rich in refined sugars may reduce the ability of the immune system fight off infections, such as those associated with a UTI, according to a 1973 study cited by the University of Michigan Health System that appeared in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Avoid foods that are rich in sugar and instead eat more unprocessed and whole grain foods. Unprocessed foods tend to have much less refined ingredients like sugar and bleached flours, and are also richer in essential vitamins, nutrients and fiber.

Non-Allergenic Foods

If you have food allergies, it will be important to make sure that you completely avoid all potential foods that contain any allergens that you are sensitive to. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, common food allergens that may irritate UTIs include dairy products, gluten, preservatives and additives. Allergic reactions to food allergies may reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotics and pain relief medications and may also reduce your ability to fight off infection.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

To ensuring adequate hydration, you should drink lots of fluids, especially water, when you have a UTI. Ample fluid consumption aids in the elimination of the bacteria naturally by urination. You should also avoid sweetened, carbonated and alcoholic drinks as they can all cause further irritation to your urinary tract.
