How to Fight the Common Cold

Fighting the common cold isn't easy since there are so many ways to catch it. You can catch the common cold just by touching a surface or breathing in air that's contaminated with rhinoviruses. Typically, colds are contagious about two to four days after the first symptoms appear, and can be contagious for up to three weeks after that point. Most of the time, your cold will clear up within one week, but sometimes it can hang around for up to two weeks.

Step 1

Take a brisk walk at least five days per week for 35 to 45 minutes to help you fight the common cold. Do not overexert yourself, however, particularly if you have a fever.

Step 2

Use a humidifier to restore moisture back into the air in your home or office. Dry climates make it easier for the virus that causes the common cold to spread.

Step 3

Drink a hot fruit cordial or warm lemon water with honey. The hot liquid can help relieve cold symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throat, body chills, fatigue and a runny nose.

Tips and Warnings

  • Exercise helps keep your immune system strong, which makes it harder for viruses and other germs to enter and take over your body.
  • If your symptoms are severe, consult with your health care provider before exercising.
