If you want an intense, low impact workout of both your upper and and lower body at home, a rowing machine is a good choice for exercise equipment. Rowing machines can be expensive, so it pays to do your homework and make your purchase decisions carefully. Consider used equipment; you may be able to save money or buy a machine with more features for less money. Try machines out in person, even if you eventually buy online.

Step 1

Determine how much money you have to spend and how much space you have for the rowing machine; this will save you from falling in love with a machine you can't afford or accommodate.

Step 2

Educate yourself about the different types of resistance used and the features of machines using the various types of resistance. Machines with hydraulic resistance use oil-filled cylinders; they are inexpensive and relatively smaller, but may leak and be less smooth than other types. Machines with water resistance use water-filled cylinders; they provide a smooth action with whooshing sound and an authentic water feel. However, machines with water resistance are expensive, can take up a lot of room and generally require more maintenance than other types. Machines with air resistance provide more resistance the more quickly you row, but can be quite noisy. Machines with magnetic resistance feature adjustable magnets; they are smaller than other machines, generally store easily and are almost silent during operation.

Step 3

Visit a gym or sports equipment store so that you can try out a variety of machines in your budget and size range. Ask about machine capacity (weight) limits before you try any machine.

Step 4

Look for quality construction, with well-finished edges and a frame that does not flex under your weight or during use.

Step 5

Look for a full range of smooth movement, with no failure of resistance and smooth braking. Experiment with various resistance settings; this will allow you to increase your workout difficulty over time.

Step 6

Notice how loud the rowing machine is while in use; this will make a difference if you plan to read or watch television while exercising.

Step 7

Check for a comfortable fit, including the seat, grips and footplates. Make sure the machine accommodates you securely and comfortably, and can be adjusted if other users will also be using the machine.

Step 8

Evaluate any electronic features such as feedback regarding length of time rowed, distance rowed, etc. Test electronic features for ease of use.

Step 9

Request written information on any warranties or guarantees that are offered on the machine. Ask questions to be sure you understand exactly what is covered.

Step 10

Ask about any delivery or set-up fees.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose a location for the rowing machine that has plenty of space and good ventilation. Always check delivery and return policies when making a purchase online. Consider using a machine at a gym or health club regularly before you buy a machine for home.
  • Keep children away from all exercise equipment, especially when it is in use. Talk with your doctor before beginning any exercise plan.
