Zyrtec, generic name cetirizine, is an antihistamine used to prevent symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing that are caused by allergies, hay fever and the common cold. In some cases this medication is also prescribed to treat hives. Although effective, Zyrtec is accompanied by a variety of side effects, some of which are common while some are more serious and rare. Before taking this medication, it is important to be aware of all the possible health repercussions and know when to seek medical treatment for them.
Common Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, the less-serious and more-common side effects of Zyrtec include dizziness, drowsiness, coughing, sore throat, dry mouth, feeling tired, headache, nausea, constipation, diarrhea and nosebleeds.
Serious Side Effects
The more serious side effects, which you should tell your doctor about immediately if you experience them, include confusion, rapid heartbeat, insomnia, uneven heart rate, urinating less, not urinating at all, becoming hyper or feeling severely restless, feeling weak, experiencing tremors or problems with your vision.
Severe Side Effects
In rare instances, severe side effects take place. These include, but are not limited to, changes in your mental or mood status, occurrence of seizures, jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes), bleeding or bruising easily and constant fatigue.
Allergic Reaction
You may be allergic to Zyrtec and not realize it until a reaction occurs. If this happens, seek emergency medical assistance. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling of your lips, tongue, face or throat, development of hives and difficulty breathing.
