In 2007, Americans spent about $14.8 billion on herbal, nonvitamin and nonmineral natural products, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The popularity of herbal remedies has risen as the results of clinical trials have supported the traditional use of the plants to treat health disorders. Some herbal treatments are well known for treating specific health disorders. Before using medicinal herbs, discuss your plans with a qualified health provider.

Garlic for Cardiovascular Health

In 2006, an estimated 81 million Americans had some form of cardiovascular disease. A popular herbal remedy for treating heart disorders is garlic. Garlic may reduce atherosclerosis by decreasing platelet aggregation and improving circulation. When using fresh garlic, be sure to mince, or otherwise crush the garlic to release its heart-healthy compounds. A supplement may be more effective than the fresh variety because most studies that demonstrate beneficial effects have been completed with aged garlic supplements, according to "The Herb Companion."

Ginkgo Biloba for Cognitive Decline

Ginkgo biloba improves memory and protects the brain from other types of cognitive decline, according to a 2009 review of clinical trials during the years from 1980 to 2007. The review's researchers, led by Dr. Reiner Kaschel, from the University of Osnabrueck in Germany, found that regular consumption of ginkgo biloba extract improves attention, executive functions and long-term memory.

Ginger for Digestive Disorders

Ginger is a medicinal herb often used to treat digestive problems including indigestion, gas, diarrhea, nausea, bloating and irritable bowel syndrome. Ginger is commonly used to treat pregnancy induced nausea and motion sickness. The digestive effects of ginger are caused by the herb's ability to facilitate the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine, reports naturopathic doctor Maureen Williams from Bastyr University.

Milk Thistle for Liver Disease

Milk thistle contains the active compounds known as silymarin, which have been used for hundreds of years to treat liver disease. Silymarin protects the liver from free radical damage, the effects of alcohol and toxins. It also promotes the generation of new liver cells. Milk thistle increases the body's levels of glutathione, an antioxidant that protects the liver.
