Adipex, also known as phentermine, is a top selling prescription medication. It has been used alone or in combinations with other medications. It gained popularity in the nineties when it was widely prescribed in combination with fenfluramine. The drug cocktail known as phen-fen was taken off the market due to side effects and fenfluramine was discontinued. Although phentermine still remains on the market today it is not without risks and side effects of its own.
Restlessness
Adipex is known to cause extreme restlessness as a side effect after eating. The restlessness can actually be beneficial if you are trying to lose weight because you end up burning more calories as you fidget and move around, however it can also lead to problems such as insomnia and an inability to concentrate on one task from start to finish.
Pulmonary Hypertension
Pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure of the pulmonary vein or artery, is a potentially fatal side effect of taking Adipex. Pulmonary hypertension is a condition of the lungs which causes shortness of breath that can lead to suffocation. If you are experiencing shortness of breath at rest or decreased ability to exercise, contact your physician immediately.
Heart Problems
Adipex has been shown to cause tachycardia, which is an increased heart rate. Adipex is a stimulant so it causes your heart to beat faster and may also cause heart palpitations. In some cases, Adipex has caused valvular heart disease which is a malfunction of the way the heart pumps blood into the body and can also be fatal. If you experience continued elevated heart rate or palpitations, contact your doctor immediately.
