Batting gloves give hitters a better grip on the bat and that can lead to stronger swings. Stronger swings can increase a player's power and batting average. Your gloves need to correspond to the size of your hand, and older players will often have to choose between large and extra-large sizes.
Classifications
Adult and youth sizes are two distinctly different versions of batting gloves. Players do not move from youth sizes to adult sizes at a specific age, but rather when the hand gets too big for the largest youth sizes. According to Nike, there is no extra-large classification for youth sizes, as large is the biggest. For adult sizes, the choices are large and extra large.
Measurements
The most obvious difference between L and XL batting gloves is the size of the glove. Nike says you should measure from the base of your hand to the tip of your middle finger, or whichever finger is longer. And you should measure your dominant hand, using inches. For men's batting gloves, those who measure between 7.25 inches and 7.75 inches should purchase a large, while measurements of 7.75 to 8 inches should go with an XL. A youth large is between 6.5 and 6.75 inches.
Selection
Large and extra-large batting gloves are packaged differently and are separate products, even if they are the same brand. Find the brand you want to buy. Then select color and the size you prefer, whether large or extra large. Some batting glove packages have a diagram on the back to help you select the correct size.
Pad Placement
Some batting gloves feature extra padding on the palms to help with grip and shock reduction after making contact with the ball. Easton adds TurboSlot pads sewn into the glove between the thumb and index finger. Large batting gloves feature a different palm size than extra large, so location of the TurboSlot pad is also different.
