A round robin tournament is one in which every player in the tournament plays each other. This style of tournament is meant to be more thorough than others that neglect to play some players against each other. In tennis, a round robin tournament usually involves quick games and multiple rotations.

Scoring

There are several options for scoring when organizing a round robin tournament for tennis. You must use a scoring system that will allow for quick matches. Because round robins usually have many players, full matches or even sets are difficult to use because of their long duration. Ten point tiebreakers are popular alternatives to more traditional sets. Some tournaments also use a timed system whereby players compete in normal games or sets for a specified amount of time, perhaps 20 minutes. Whoever is in the lead at the end of the time gets a point and wins the match.

Execution

There are several ways to execute a round robin tournament. The first is to lay out all the necessary matches. A useful numerical tool is to assign individuals all their matches and then move on to the next individual. Assign each player a number and go from there. For example: 1 plays 2, 1 plays 3, 1 plays 4, etc. Do this for each player to get the total number of matches. If you have several courts you can simply set up matches on each court and have each player rotate after each match until they have played everyone.

Benefits

Tennis pits individuals against each other in a way that few other sports do. Much of a game is decided by how a player implements his or her own strategy against the playing styles of other players. As a result, one of the best ways to improve at tennis is to play as many different players as possible. A round robin tournament allows tennis players to see lots of players in a relatively short period of time. It also encourages the development and execution of playing strategies quickly because the matches are so short.

Tips

If you do not have enough courts to occupy all players at once, be mindful of players that have played several games in a row. It is not fair to force some players to play all their matches in a row, while other players get breaks in between. A successful round robin tennis tournament is not just about getting matches in, it´s also about having fun playing competitively. Consider using brackets or groups of players within the same skill level. Also, consider instituting an entry fee to help supply food and snacks for the tournament players.
