A smile is often the first thing people notice about you so it makes sense that you want your teeth to be straight. While braces are an option, they can be unsightly and uncomfortable. Maintenance can also be a chore. Fortunately, today there are several options for straightening your teeth that do not involve wires or bands. Results for some procedures can be seen in as little as a month.

Step 1

Use the Invisalign system, which can straighten your teeth over the course of a year. Schedule a visit with your dentist to have molds taken of your teeth. Wear the clear, retainer-like pieces daily. Remove them for eating and drinking. Visit your dentist every two weeks to receive a new set of pieces that will gradually straighten the alignment of your teeth.

Step 2

Cover crooked teeth with veneers. Visit your dentist to have your teeth inspected. Some of your teeth may need to be shaved down to fit the veneers over them. After the veneers are applied, schedule a maintenance plan with your dentist so he can monitor their condition. Avoid using highly abrasive toothpaste and replace veneers every 10 to 20 years.

Step 3

Straighten your top teeth with cosmetic contouring. Verify with your dentist that your teeth are candidates for contouring by having X-rays taken to ensure your teeth are thick enough. Visit your dentist up to three times to have your teeth reshaped with a sanding bit or laser.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear a mouth guard when you participate in sports or activities where you may potentially be struck in the face. Avoid chipping. Don't use your teeth to open packages and don't bite down on hard objects, such as hard candy or ice. Practice good hygiene even with veneers since veneers don't completely cover the tooth and decay is still possible.
