Bursitis occurs when the fluid filled sacs -- officially known as bursa -- that protect your muscles and tendons become inflamed. Repetitive motions, strenuous activities or other chronic conditions can cause bursitis. Although bursitis will typically heal on its own without medical intervention, conventional health care providers may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen or a corticosteroid to alleviate your discomfort. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, herbs that help to reduce inflammation may also help to speed the healing process. As with all herbal remedies, it is important to consult with your primary care physician before self-medicating.

Step 1

Drink white willow bark tea to alleviate pain and inflammation. Boil 1/2 tsp. of white willow bark in 8 oz. of water. Limit your consumption to 3 cups per day.

Step 2

Add warm water to turmeric powder to form a spreadable paste. Apply directly to your body and cover with a cotton cloth. Take a turmeric supplement 3 times per day for 12 weeks, or according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 3

Steep a small finger of fresh ginger in 8 oz. of water. Add honey and lemon to taste and drink throughout the day.

Step 4

Talk to your herbalist or doctor about the benefits of evening primrose oil for inflammation. Take 1,200 mg. per day or follow your herbalist's instructions.

Step 5

Take 150 mg of Boswellia serrata, also known as Indian frankincense, three times per day to increase circulation and reduce pain.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always consult with your doctor before taking herbs in combination with any other medications.
  • People who take blood thinning medication should talk to their doctor before taking any herbal remedies. The chemical properties of white willow bark are similar to aspirin and should not be given to children under the age of 18.
