Laxatives
Senna is a laxative normally used in herbal diet teas. Herbal teas help people lose weight by inducing movement of bowels. However, laxatives also increase the amount of water removed from the body. Laxatives like senna also soften stools, so patients are able to rid the body of the content in the intestines. The loss of water and intestinal material creates the effect of weight loss. Weight loss using excessive laxatives is unhealthy, but it can be used in small doses as a health supplement for people who are constipated. Constipation can be from poor eating habits or prescription medication.
Stimulation
Diet teas contain high doses of caffeine that give the dieter an energetic feeling. Caffeine does not directly help people lose weight, but it does act as a diuretic. Caffeine causes more urine output, so water weight is lost with diet teas. The inadvertent weight loss from caffeine is its ability to boost the heart rate and give a person more energy. Some people drink diet teas for the caffeine boost, so they have more energy during a regular workout. People who drink caffeine for energy are able to work out harder, burning more calories. Since caffeine is a stimulant, it acts like adrenaline, raising heart rate, constricting blood vessels and sending more blood to muscles.
Reduced Appetite
Appetite suppressant herbs are a part of diet teas that give a dieter a full feeling, reducing the amount of food and calories the dieter consumes. Some appetite suppressants included in diet teas are methylcellulose, psyllium and agar. These products are consumed and swell when water is added to the content. The swelled contents makes you feel full. Appetite suppressant products work in conjunction with the caffeine. Caffeine is also an appetite suppressant, so patients feel full while losing water. For this reason, patients should be sure to drink plenty of water when drinking diet teas.
