Asthma Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Asthma is a chronic medical condition that affects your airways. According to Medline Plus, the muscles in your airways constrict and your air passages swell, making it harder for you to breathe.

Common Symptoms

According to the Mayo Clinic, asthma symptoms include trouble breathing, chest pain, wheezing and coughing. Asthma symptoms are classified as mild, moderate or severe.

Cause

Medline Plus states that an inflammation in the airways causes asthma. Triggers such as dust, pollen, mold, exercise and stress can initiate an asthma attack.

Treatment

Rescue medications such as Albuterol are inhaled to provide immediate asthmatic relief. Long-term medications such as Fluticasone are taken every day to prevent your airways from constricting.

Emergency Symptoms

If your lips and face turn blue, and you have extreme difficulty breathing, you should seek immediate help. According to Medline Plus, other emergency symptoms include sweating, confusion and drowsiness.

Home Remedies

The Mayo Clinic states that dusting your home daily, turning on your air conditioning and changing your air filter can decrease your asthma symptoms.
