Staphylococci are bacteria found on the surface of healthy skin and mucous membranes. Staph is found in the nasal passages, oral cavity, gastrointestinal and urinary tract. The presence of staph is not abnormal, however when bacteria counts increase or enter the blood stream it can infect all major organs of the body. Minor pus-forming infections such as boils, and styes may result. Staph internally can produce serious and sometimes fatal conditions such as pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis and endocarditis. Elderly and infants are at high risk for complications associated with staph. Immunocompromised individuals such as cancer patients, diabetics and transplant recipients are more susceptible to staph infections. MRSA and VRSA are strains of staph bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics.

Step 1

Eat savory. A Romanian study evaluated 10 plant extracts' effects on staph bacteria, including antibiotic resistant strains. The plants' antibacterial action was compared to eight antibiotics. The herb savory had an antibacterial effect on staph similar to an antibiotic. Savory is a culinary herb available dried or fresh in most grocery stores. This herb can be used in meat, egg and fish recipes. The dried herb provides the highest concentration of internal anti-bacterial properties. Savory should be added at the end of cooking for maximum benefit.

Step 2

Drink peppermint tea. Peppermint has shown antibacterial properties against several strains of staph. Peppermint tea may lower internal staph bacteria in the mouth, stomach and urinary tract. Mint tea is widely available and can be taken daily. Peppermint tea is considered safe for the elderly and children. Maximize the antibacterial potential by covering the tea cup after you have added hot water. Peppermint from the garden can be made into tea. Dry peppermint leaves thoroughly and discard any unused after one year.

Step 3

Drink bottled aloe vera juice. Aloe inhibited staph in a clinical study. Aloe vera beverages are sold in grocery and health food stores. Drinking commercially prepared aloe may inhibit staph in healthy individuals. Never ingest aloe vera gel directly from the plant. Aloe vera beverages may affect blood sugar and potassium levels and are not suitable for diabetics or individuals on heart medication. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant and children should not consume aloe vera. Individuals who are allergic to garlic or onions should not drink aloe vera. Aloe is not recommended for individuals who are immunocompromised. Aloe vera beverages should be taken with caution and not in excess.
