Conditions that require a person to live on a liquid diet for a period of time may include a stricture (narrowing) of the esophagus, or a wired jaw which sets the jawbone to be healed after breaking. During this time, proper attention must be paid to the nutritional composition of the patient's diet. Because the body is healing, or possibly preparing for surgery, a balanced diet is essential for optimal outcome.
Tips and Warnings
- Cover and refrigerate unconsumed portions of blended food or supplemental beverages for food safety. Maintain a variety of foods to assure adequate nutritional intake as well as to prevent taste fatigue.
- Check with physican before using a straw as this can tear stitches in the mouth. Consume adequate amounts of liquids to meet calorie and protein needs. Drink water in addition to consuming the liquid diet to assure adequate hydration.
