People often use weight-loss pills as a part of a fad diet, in the quest to quickly lose weight. Unfortunately, these pills can be dangerous. You can identify weight-loss pills by reading labels and identifying common herbs and ingredients used in these capsules. Many weight-loss pills pack caffeine in the ingredients, so the dieter has a suppressed appetite and more energy, which burns more calories. Before taking any pill, read the label to identify common weight-loss pill ingredients.
Step 1
View caffeine content on the bottle's label. Weight-loss pills often provide high doses of caffeine. This is part of the way they stimulate weight loss. Caffeine is a diuretic, and it increases heart rate, blood pressure and energy. For this reason, weight-loss pills cause patients to lose more weight during aerobic exercises.
Step 2
Check the label for any laxatives. Some diet pills claim to help you lose weight and detoxify your system. This is done through laxatives, which causes bowel movements. However, laxatives also cause water and fluid loss. It can lead to excessive electrolyte loss. Some laxative materials found in diet pills are sunna, rhubarb and psyllium.
Step 3
Use a pill identifier website to look up the pill's content (see Resources). Pill ID websites provide a way for you to describe the pill and identify it when you don't have the bottle or nutrition label to check ingredients. Once you have the pill identification, you can look up the ingredients.
