1. Eggs Get a Nutritional Gold Star
Eggs were once a staple of breakfast, alongside a slab of bacon and slice of buttered toast. It is no wonder eggs got a bad rap as a major contributor to heart disease. However, eggs offer a lot more nutritional benefits than many other foods with cholesterol and fat (like aforementioned bacon). Along with being an excellent source of protein, eggs contain 13 essential vitamins and minerals including lutein, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, folate and riboflavin. Eggs are also one of the few foods that contain Vitamin D.
2. Look and Feel Good With Eggs
Eggs help improve eyesight, provide energy to keep you going through the day and can help prevent cancer-causing free radicals in the body. Eggs can also help your hair and skin look and feel radiant. Apply a mixture of egg white, honey and water to your face, let dry and rinse with warm water for an easy at home facial. Mix one egg yolk with a cup of water for deep conditioning of oily hair. Just don't rinse it with hot water or you'll end up with scrambled eggs in your hair.
3. Eat Eggs all day Long
Eggs make great dishes outside of breakfast. Boil up a batch of eggs and keep them on hand as a tasty midday snack. Try topping a fresh leaf salad with slices of hardboiled egg for an added boost of protein. Use eggs to make a tasty quiche or frittata for an easy dinner or cook it with rice for some homemade Chinese food. A bonus of eggs is that they are easy on the budget and stay fresh for several weeks in the refrigerator.
4. Make Eggs Even Better for you
Eggs are a nutritional goldmine, but they do have drawbacks. One egg contains 213 milligrams of cholesterol. The daily recommendation for healthy adults is no more than 300 milligrams. So, one egg takes up a lot of that daily allotment. However, there are many ways to enjoy eggs without the cholesterol and fat. A majority of the calories (90%) and all of the fat and cholesterol in eggs is in the yolk. Swap the egg yolk for two egg whites in dishes for a low fat, low calorie option. Egg substitutes are another way to have your eggs without worrying about the fat and cholesterol.
5. Eggs Hide in Many Places
If you are on a low cholesterol diet, you need to be on the lookout for eggs. Pasta, baked goods, sauces and dressing all contain eggs. So even if you skip eggs at breakfast, you may still be eating them throughout the day. Check nutrition labels for cholesterol listings so you know for sure.
