The aloe vera plant has thick green leaves with moist, fibrous pulp inside. When harvested and used in a drink, the pulp may ease the discomfort of colitis, ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome and treat constipation, according to the book "Making Plant Medicine." In a matter of minutes, fresh aloe vera leaves and a few other ingredients mix up a tasty drink.
Consult your physician prior to treating any health condition with an aloe vera drink or any other home remedy.
Step 1
Cut a mature aloe vera leaf from its plant, using a paring knife. Cut the leaf off at its base to harvest the entire leaf.
Step 2
Scrape the pointy edges off the aloe vera leaf, using the paring knife. Then cut the aloe vera leaf in half lengthwise to expose its pulp.
Step 3
Scrape the pulp out of the aloe vera leaf, using a teaspoon, and place the pulp in a strainer. Avoid scraping the leaf's yellow part, or latex, which is located under the green rind. When ingested, the latex may cause abdominal cramping and diarrhea.
Step 4
Mix 1 cup of water with 1 tbsp. of vinegar in a bowl. Pour the water and vinegar solution over the aloe vera pulp to rinse off any microscopic pieces of latex stuck to the pulp.
Step 5
Pour 6 oz. of orange juice into a blender. Add 2 oz. of aloe vera pulp to the blender.
Step 6
Blend the aloe vera pulp and orange juice on the fastest setting for 30 seconds. Check the consistency of the juice. Stop blending if it has the consistency of orange juice with extra pulp. If not, blend for another 30 seconds and recheck. Continue this process until the proper consistency is obtained.
Step 7
Pour the aloe vera juice into a jar. Screw on the lid tightly and store in the refrigerator until use.
