Candida albicans is a species of fungus naturally present in your body. It does not affect your health when it occurs in low levels, but an overgrowth of candida can cause a variety of uncomfortable conditions called candidiasis. Candidiasis can break out in your mouth, throat and genitals or invade your whole body. Although HIV, diabetes, cancer and surgical patients are more susceptible to candidiasis, certain nutritional choices can cause the condition in nearly anyone.
Nutrition
Many health practitioners agree that a diet high in refined carbohydrates and yeast helps candida grow. When combined with factors that alter our beneficial intestinal flora, such as disease, antibiotics or stress, candida can take over. Some less refined foods that contain mold, hormones or toxins are also believed to alter our balance of microflora and contribute to candidiasis. An important aspect of preventing and treating candidiasis is avoiding foods that fuel candida or alter our intestinal flora.
Foods to Avoid
The most important food ingredients to avoid are the refined carbohydrates that fuel candida growth. This means eliminating confectionery products, sugar-sweetened drinks, fruit and fruit juices from your diet. Food items that should also be avoided due to potential disruption of your intestinal flora include nuts, alcoholic drinks, fermented products, vegetables classified as "nightshade" plants and highly-processed products.
Foods to Eat
The majority of anti-candida diets include foods that help strengthen the immune system, promote healthy intestinal flora, improve digestion and have anti-microbial properties. This means eating nutritious, organic products that are low in starch, yeast, refined sugar and allergens. Focus on eating cooked organic vegetables and meats, organic seeds and whole grains, citrus fruit, beans and probiotic yogurt. Fresh garlic, oregano and coconut milk are also recommended for their anti-microbial activities.
Supplements
Supplements that help replace the beneficial bacterial in your digestive tract, have anti-fungal properties and boost your immune system are commonly recommended for treating and preventing candidiasis. Common probiotic supplements include species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which live in your intestines to help your absorb nutrients and ward off pathogens. Caprylic acid is an anti-fungal fatty acid found in coconut milk that is commonly used to fight candida infections. Other helpful supplements include garlic extract, oregano oil, grapeseed oil and vitamin C, which can stimulate your immune system and provide anti-fungal properties. Use caution when taking any supplements.
