A List of Carbohydrates in Foods

Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients that are found in the foods we eat daily. Each grams of carbohydrate comes out to four calories. Grains and fruits contain high amounts of carbohydrates; however, some amount of carbohydrates is found in the majority of food. Because carbohydrates are the main energy source used to fuel the body, it is essential to consume an adequate amount, about 30 to 50 percent of your daily calories.

Low Carbohydrate Foods

Low carbohydrate foods, usually under five grams per serving, are often used in high fat and protein diets such as the Atkins Diet. Low carbohydrate dieting sends the body into a state known as ketosis where the body burns fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. Vegetables are healthy, low carbohydrate foods, containing only trace amounts, often under one or two grams per serving. Most types of lean meats contain zero carbohydrates, with the exception of pre-cooked ham which had added sugar. Similar to vegetables, cheese only has trace amounts of carbohydrates. One slice of cheddar cheese contains only .4 grams of carbs and a single slice of swiss contains 1.5 grams.

Medium Carbohydrate Foods

Foods with a moderate amount of carbohydrates include fruits, whole wheat products and peanut butter. One medium banana, for example, has just over 25 grams of carbohydrates. A medium apple contains 25.1 grams of carbohydrates. Whole wheat products, such as brown rice and sweet potatoes, sometimes contain slightly higher amounts, but are packed with healthy fiber. One cup of brown rice has just under 45 grams of carbohydrates, but close to four grams of fiber. As for whole wheat bread, two slices generally contain between 20 and 30 grams of carbohydrates.

High Carbohydrate Foods

Due to weight-related issues, high carbohydrate foods should not be consumed regularly. Unfortunately, these are the type of carbohydrates that much of the population takes in. Fast and processed foods fall into this category. A large order of fries from your local fast food restaurant contains over 50 grams of carbs, usually closer to 60 or 70. One single ounce of flavored chips, such as nacho cheese, has over 15 grams of carbs, which adds up quickly. Limit these high carbohydrate foods to prevent unnecessary weight gain and health issues.
