Introduction
Marketed as an herbal weight loss supplement, Lipo 6 claims to help its users lose weight by increasing metabolism and suppressing appetite. Because Lipo 6 is marketed as a dietary supplement, the FDA has not evaluated any of the claims made by Lipo 6 creators Nutrex Research, Inc. This means that you should speak to your doctor first before taking the supplement to insure that you are not putting your health at risk.
Synephrine
When ephedra was pulled off the dietary supplement market by the FDA in 2006, a new central nervous system (CNS) stimulant called synephrine was introduced to the dietary supplement market. Synephrine is the key active ingredient in Lipo 6 and comes from a fruit called Citrus aurantium, commonly referred to as bitter orange. As a CNS stimulant, synephrine is believed to help aid weight loss by increasing the rate in which the body's metabolism burns calories.
Bioperine
Another active ingredient in Lipo 6 is bioperine, also known as black pepper extract. Bioperine is believed to help increase the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals into the body such as beta-caroten, vitamin B6, selenium and vitamin C.
Yohimbine
Yohimbine is also listed as an active ingredient in Lipo 6. Yohimbine is considered an alpha blocker, with the ability to increase the chemicals in your body responsible for dilating your blood vessels. This makes it more commonly used as a supplement for erectile dysfunction than weight loss. A long list of potential health issues are associated with the use of yohimbine. As such, you should talk to your doctor about the possible side effects of yohimbine before using Lipo 6 as a weight loss product.
Caffeine
Another active ingredient in Lipo 6 is caffeine. Caffeine is one of the most widely used active ingredients in weight loss supplements. According to the Mayo Clinic, caffeine is a stimulant that may have a small affect on appetite suppression, weight loss and calorie burning. However, not enough studies have been done to fully support these claims. For those sensitive to caffeine, Lipo 6 may cause trembling, agitation, insomnia and feelings of anxiety.
