Influenza, also referred to as the flu is the result of a viral infection attacking the respiratory system. If not treated, the flu can lead to severe complications and may even be deadly. Herbs that have antiviral properties may help improve or reduce symptoms associated with the flu. Always talk with your doctor before using herbs to treat the flu or any other health condition.

Symptoms

If you come down with the flu, chances are you may feel as if you have come down with the common cold as the symptoms are similar. For example, some common symptoms of the flu can include dry cough, weakness and fatigue, chest and nasal congestion, headache and body aches, sweating and the chills as well as a fever.

Elderberry

Elderberry is native to parts of Asia, Africa and Europe and can now be found in the United States. The elderberry bush or tree may grow up to 30 feet high producing green berries that turn black upon ripening. Once cooked, the berries are used for their medicinal properties and are commonly used to relieve nasal congestion and treat inflammation. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, one study showed that elderberry extract or sambucol may reduce the duration of the flu by three days. In addition, taking a lozenge containing elderberry extract may lessen flu symptoms if taken within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. Standardized elderberry extract, or sambucol may be taken in doses of 4 tbsp. per day for three days for flu symptoms.

Echinacea

Echinacea is one of the most popular herbs in America. Echinacea contains properties that are believed to stimulate the immune system and it also has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Ninety five people showing early sign of cold and flu symptoms such as fever, runny nose and scratchy throat, showed improved symptoms after drinking several cups of echinacea tea on a daily basis for five days. Add 1 to 2g of dried echinacea root or herb to 1 cup of hot water to make an immune boosting tea and drink up to three times per day for up to 10 days.

Warnings

If left untreated, the flu can lead to serious health conditions such as pneumonia and may be life threatening. If you begin to notice symptoms associated with this condition, consult your doctor for an evaluation.
