Pan dulce, also known as pan de huevo, is a type of sweet roll from Mexico and Central America. Derived from the French influences of the 1800s, pan dulce now comes in many varieties and is commonly served at breakfast. The bread is typically lightly sweetened and often topped with a decorative sugar coating. Pan dulce is rich in calories, primarily from carbohydrates and sugar.

Components

A medium-sized pan dulce roll without the sugar topping weighs around 2.6 oz. or 76 g. Carbohydrates make up around 42 g of that measure, of which just over 13 g are sugar. Proteins contribute just over 5 g and fats just under 5 g per serving. Around 23 g of the roll are water and dietary fiber makes up 1.2 g. With the sugar topping, the same size pan dulce roll weighs 93 g with 52 g of carbs and almost 21 g of sugar.

Calories

One medium pan dulce roll without the sugar topping holds a total of 235 calories, of which 170 calories, from carbohydrates alone. Another 40 calories are provided by fats, while proteins offer about 25 calories per serving. Just under 12 percent of a typical 2000 calorie diet can be provided by a serving of one pan dulce roll. If you prefer the sugar-topped pan dulce roll, you'll be adding 62 calories.

Vitamins

Several essential vitamins are available within a medium pan dulce roll. The highest amounts include thiamin at 0.3 mg or 25 percent of the recommended daily intake, and folate at 96 mcg or 24 percent of the RDI. Less significant amounts of vitamins include riboflavin, niacin and vitamins A, B6, B-12, and D.

Minerals

One medium pan dulce roll also provides certain dietary minerals, such as selenium at 16 mcg or 29 percent of the RDI, iron at 2 mg or 20 percent and phosphorus at 62 mg or nearly 9 percent. Other lesser quantities of minerals include calcium, magnesium, zinc and potassium.

Health Benefit

Harvard School of Public Health states that a sufficient amount of carbohydrates in the diet is essential to provide needed energy for healthy metabolism, proper organ function and sustained physical activity. Eaten in moderation, pan dulce rolls are a nutritious source of carbohydrates within the diet.
