Gear is one of the most important considerations when it comes to backpacking, whether you are an avid backpacker or just starting out. Backpacking gear includes everything from necessary clothing to items used for safety and protection. All backpacking gear should be light, portable and easy to use. Quality backpacking products are also weather-resistant and sturdy.

Backpacks

Start with a reliable backpack when planning your hiking trip. Backpacks range in size and weight, with several styles to choose from. Your choice will largely depend on the length of your hike and the weather conditions. When shopping for your backpack, decide whether you prefer an external or internal frame. An external frame backpack has a frame that sits away from the back. These are designed to support heavier loads, and are often much larger than backpacks with internal frames. An internal frame generally sits snug to your back and shoulders. It is lightweight and allows you to maneuver more easily. Internal backpacks have a variety of suspension systems. Most people use a traditional double shoulder harness for backpacking, as they provide stability on both shoulders. Single shoulder backpacks are gaining popularity, however, as they allow the weight of the pack to sit much lower. Stabilizer straps around the waist help keep the pack in place. Pack your backpack with the heaviest items at the bottom, and use side pockets for water bottles and nonperishable snacks.

Apparel

The right apparel is essential when backpacking. Find out ahead of time what the weather will be for the length of your trip. Start with comfortable, breathable waterproof shoes or boots. Choose from trail, trail running, off-trail, mountaineering and rough trail styles, depending on the terrain. Dress in layers, and leave room to accommodate extra clothing in your pack. Wear breathable and non-clingy clothing that is UV resistant and waterproof. Bring trekking poles for stabilization and support. Pack a parka if cold conditions threaten, rain poncho, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and make them easy to grab.

Supplies

You need certain basic supplies to set up camp and survive in the wilderness. Supplies vary, depending on the season and the length of your excursion. Examples include a backpacking stove; cooking pan; utensils; fuel packets; pocket knife; first-aid kit; compass; GPS; flashlight; ibuprofen; draw cord; batteries; fire starter; water purifier; kettle; cup; and binoculars. Pack supplies in waterproof bags or containers, especially if you will be in or around water.

Tents and Bags

You need a good tent and sleeping bag for overnight backpacking stays. Choose a tent based on average weather conditions in the area. Most tents are designed for the seasons. Lightweight, waterproof tents are best for warm climate conditions and mountaineering; high altitude tents work in bitter cold weather conditions. Choose a sleeping bag that is comfortable and lightweight for your pack. Sleeping bags come in three main styles: rectangular, semi-rectangular and mummy. Sleeping bags are insulated based on three seasons -- spring, summer and winter.
