Think of food as the fuel to keep the body running in tip-top shape. Although some food simply tastes good, much of it is so unhealthy it can actually speed the aging process. The foods highest in nutrition, on the other hand, can promote a longer, healthier life. Unhealthy foods contain high amounts of animal fat, sodium, processed sugar and preservatives, while healthy foods are high in antioxidants. "Produce is the most important health care money can buy," states Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of "Eat Right to Live."
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables have a combination of healthy elements, including the nutritional value and fiber that keep the digestive tract running smoothly. Getting enough plant-based food may keep you healthy, both physically and emotionally, and living longer. Foods high in vitamins, antioxidants and other elements that fight cancer include blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, squash, walnuts, pomegranates, cabbage, peppers and sunflower seeds.
Seafood and Meat
Most seafood and meat contain protein and vitamins that aren't as readily available in plant foods. Salmon, herring, sardines, tuna and other oily seafood high in omega-3 fatty acids are good to help prevent cardiovascular disease, depression, dry skin, lack of concentration and pain in the joints. Other healthy meats include lean beef, lean pork, lean lamb, lean veal, buffalo, skinless chicken and skinless turkey.
Dairy and Eggs
Low-fat dairy is an excellent source of calcium, protein and other essential nutrients. Look for fat-free milk, yogurt, low-fat cheese and other dairy items. Eggs are packed with protein, omega-3 fatty acids and many other vitamins.
Cereal, Grains and Breads
Look for whole grain cereals, grains and breads for fiber and other nutritional content. Read the labels and stay away from those with trans fats, sugar and sodium. Good choices include whole oatmeal, whole wheat bread, brown rice and whole wheat pasta.
Unhealthy Foods
Foods that are high in the bad types of fats, such as saturated and trans fats, wreak havoc on the cardiovascular system, add unhealthy pounds and may be associated with increased cancer risks. Other elements that make foods unhealthy include high levels of sodium, processed sugar and other chemicals. Some of the foods on the unhealthy list include anything cooked in lard and fried snacks such as potato chips, doughnuts and processed meats. Sausage and hot dogs are particularly unhealthy because they have a combination of unhealthy elements.
Foods with Hidden Dangers
Some of the foods that may seem harmless actually pack quite a few sneaky, unhealthy ingredients. Some of these include frozen entrees, high-sodium canned soups, ice cream, sugary smoothies, some microwave popcorn and designer coffee beverages filled with sugar and trans fats. Watch out for anything high in saturated fats and salt that may cause or worsen cancer and heart conditions.
