Remaining seated for hours at a time, your lower spine and buttocks are at risk for pain from the constant pressure placed on your coccyx. Constant wheelchair use can increase your risk of muscle deterioration and pressure sores, posing more of a hassle than a help in most cases. Easing your pain and preventing complications should be done with the help of your doctor, nurse or specially trained physical therapist.

Step 1

Ingest over-the-counter anti inflammatory pain medication as directed on the packaging. According to Caring Medical's website, anti-inflammatory pain medication reduces swelling and provides short term pain relief. These medications are not meant for long-term use, though, and can prove to have serious side effects when used for longer than two weeks on a regular basis.

Step 2

Apply a foam pressure cushion to the seat of your wheelchair. Foam pressure cushions are designed to cradle your backside and reduce the force of your weight when sitting for long periods of time. According to Wheelchair.ca, foam pressure cushions may elevate you to a higher level than is comfortable so make sure to test various thicknesses to find one that fits your needs and comfort level.

Step 3

Consult your physician regarding prolotherapy injections. According to Caring Medical, prolotherapy works by helping your body to naturally repair tendons and ligaments that are weakened by periods of inactivity. These injections boost your body's natural healing properties, decreasing pain.

Step 4

Change position every two hours suggests Medline Plus. This resets pressure areas from your coccyx to your hip or legs, preventing pressure sores and helping to alleviate buttock pain. Sliding a pillow under one hip to keep you stationary will help keep pressure to a minimum.
