Celebrities like Beyonce Knowles, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie all say they have had success with the Master Cleanser, a detox diet and fast. The Master Cleanser is also called the "Lemonade Diet" because it involves drinking a specific recipe for lemonade for a minimum of 10 days. Since it is a fast, you do not eat any food or drink any other liquids. It was invented by Stanley Burroughs, an alternative health practitioner who passed away in 1991 and who created the fast to help people overcome diseases and cleanse the body of toxins. The Master Cleanser can also aid in weight loss.
Paul Bragg N.D., Ph.D, a health and fitness adviser to top Olympic champions like Murray Rose, states in his book "The Miracle of Fasting" that "The purpose of the fast is to allow the body full range and scope to fulfill its self-healing, self-repairing, self-rejuvenating functions to the best advantage. [Fasting is] probably the fastest and safest way or means of regaining health ever conceived by the human man."
Tips and Warnings
- If you are not sure you have the discipline for a 10-day fast, try the Fruit Flush diet. The Fruit Flush was invented by nutritionist Jay Robb. Like the Master Cleanser, it is important to follow the directions carefully and not eat anything but the prescribed foods during the entire fast.
- Susan Moores, R.D., a nutrition expert who specializes in cardiovascular nutrition, food safety, and women's and children's nutrition, says in an article for MSNBC.com that cleanses can lead to unhealthy side effects. "Vitamin deficiencies, muscle breakdown and blood-sugar problems---not to mention frequent liquid bowel movements---are some of the seriously unpleasant drawbacks to these plans, which are skimpy on solid foods and often call for laxatives," she says.
