Herbal Medications for Treating IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a common gastrointestinal health complaint in the United States. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse states that as many as 20 percent of American adults suffer from its related symptoms. Women develop this condition more frequently than men. Certain herbal medications are known for their ability to ease IBS symptoms. However, consider reviewing your treatment options with your physician before using herbal medicine to treat your ailment.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome targets your large intestine, and it causes you to experience abdominal pain or discomfort, cramping, bloating, intestinal gas, diarrhea and constipation. However, the signs and symptoms of this condition can vary significantly between individuals. Most people with irritable bowel syndrome are female, under the age of 35, and have a family history of irritable bowel syndrome. Although there is no known cause of irritable bowel syndrome, possible triggers include certain foods, stress, hormonal imbalances and other illnesses.

Certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," states that if you have irritable bowel syndrome, you can improve your quality of life by changing your diet, exercising regularly and replacing necessary nutrients via supplementation. Herbal medications that may help treat irritable bowel syndrome include milk thistle, licorice, burdock root, red clover, alfalfa, aloe vera, peppermint, skullcap, valerian root, lemon balm, chamomile, fenugreek, ginger, goldenseal, lobelia, marshmallow, pau d'arco and rose hips.

An Effective Herb

Peppermint is one of the most effective herbs in controlling irritable bowel syndrome. According to Balch, peppermint assists both digestion and the healing of your large intestine. Peppermint also helps treat upset stomach, intestinal gas and the sensation of excessive fullness that often accompanies this condition. Peppermint, a plant native to Europe, is useful for treating many conditions, including indigestion, nausea, rheumatism, poor appetite and heart trouble. The leaves of the peppermint plant are frequently used in herbal preparations.

Suggestions

In addition to using herbal medications to help treat irritable bowel syndrome, eating a healthy diet, supplementing your diet with fiber and consuming sufficient amounts of water are important for managing your condition. Try eating more high-fiber foods, including vegetables and whole grains such as brown rice, and reduce your intake of gas-producing foods such as beans, broccoli and cabbage. Take the time to chew your food well, and try not to eat too much or eat and run.
