Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that can lead to panic attacks and sudden feelings of terror. Physical symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dizziness and pain in the chest. Panic attacks can occur at any time and disrupt your daily activities, and may be precipitated by stress. Certain herbal remedies may be effective in relieving or managing symptoms of panic disorder. However, herbal remedies should never take the place of other forms of treatment. You should consult your doctor before starting any herbal treatments.

Kava Kava

A herbal remedy called kava kava may be helpful in relieving symptoms of anxiety that is mild or moderate. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) says a helpful dose may be 100-200 mg, two to four times per day. They caution, however, this herbal remedy may have a negative impact on the health of your liver. You should check with your doctor before starting this herbal remedy, and do not use this herb to replace other forms of therapy.

Passionflower

Passionflower is another herb that may be helpful in relieving your anxiety, according to the UMMC. Sufficient evidence is not available, however, and more research is required to determine any effect. Do not take this remedy in place of other treatments and consult your doctor before starting this or any other herbal treatments.

Other Herbs

Ginger, chamomile and licorice are all herbal remedies some people may find effective in controlling or relieving the symptoms of anxiety characteristic of panic disorder. The UMMC cautions, however, that licorice should not be taken if you suffer from heart disease, heart failure, liver problems or kidney problems. Check with your doctor before consuming any of these herbs, and never use them to replace other forms of treatments.
