The Atkins diet is a low-carb diet which was created by Dr Robert Atkins and then published in his book in 1972. The diet was based on a research study he read which focuses on ketosis, and fat burning versus glucose burning. There are four phases to the Akins diet: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance, and Lifetime Maintenance. Each of the four phases allows increasing levels of carbohydrate intake.

Ketosis

The normal process for human energy production is via glycogen stores. The consumption of carbohydrates forms glycogen stores. The theory behind weight loss in the Atkins diet is that if the body does not receive sufficient carbs in the diet, it begins to burn fat for energy, rather than using the glycogen stores. This process is called ketosis.

Diet

The Induction phase of the diet is the most carb-restrictive in that net carbs allowed over the course of one day is 20g. This phase is intended to last two weeks and should cause the body to enter into a state of ketosis. Five to ten pounds of weight loss a week can be expected during this phase. The second phase, Ongoing Weight Loss, allows for 25 net grams of carbs each day. This amount provides for continued weight loss. This phase is maintained until within ten pounds of the goal weight. The Pre-Maintenance phase allows up to 35 net grams of carbohydrates each day, and aims to help the dieter find the most carbs one can eat in one day without gaining weight. Lifetime Maintenance is the final phase, and concentrates on a healthy lifestyle which includes few processed foods. Someone in the Lifetime Maintenance phase may return to any of the other three phases at any time if unwanted weight is gained.

Bars

Atkins International sells Atkins products to aid in weight loss. One such product line is the Atkins Advantage line of bars. There are many flavors from which to choose, including the Caramel Double Chocolate Crunch Bar, the Coconut Almond Delight Bar, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar. Bars are available for purchase on the Atkins website.

Controversy

Although widely popular, particularly in 2003 and 2004, there are some controversial issues surrounding the Atkins Diet. There are conflicting results arising from scientific studies involving the diet's efficacy and safety. A modified form of the Atkins Diet has been proven to be an effective treatment of intractable juvenile epilepsy.
