Losing weight can improve one's quality of life. The decision to lose weight requires permanent changes to your eating and workout habits. Weight management requires a decrease in the amount of calories you eat daily and sustained physical fitness several times a week. An effective weight loss diet is high in healthy foods.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are an important part of a healthy weight loss diet. Unlike refined grains found in products such as white bread, whole grains have their structure left intact and contain high amounts of vitamins, protein and fiber which also helps in digestion. Incorporate whole grain into your diet with foods such as whole grain bread, bran cereal and brown rice.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are especially great for losing weight because they are high in energy volume meaning they are low in calories but still high in nutrient content. Grapefruits for example, are about 90 percent water and contain less than 40 calories per half serving. Eat a piece of fruit at breakfast and lunch and at least one serving of vegetables at lunch and dinner.

Calories

There are approximately 3,500 calories in one pound of fat. To lose one pound in a week therefore, you must burn an average of 500 calories more than you eat per day. The best way to burn calories is through physical exercise such a running, swimming, cycling, playing sports, hiking, lifting weights or any other physical activity that requires an increased heart beat.

Water

Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Water promotes healthy kidneys, flushes the system and keeps you hydrated. Hydration will allow you to workout longer when exercising. Drinking a glass of water before a meal will help you feel more full without eating as much and help cut down on calories.
