The food pyramid for children, officially known as My Pyramid for Kids, is a simplified version of the adult My Pyramid guide. It uses colors, shapes and simplified language to impart messages about healthy eating and exercise to children.

Function

The food pyramid for children is designed to help children ages 6 to 11 learn how to choose healthy foods and get enough physical activity every day.

Features

This food pyramid for kids uses a color-coded system to represent grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and protein (meat and beans) plus fats. The image of a child running up a flight of stairs on one side of the pyramid illustrates the need for exercise.

Effects

From this age-appropriate version of the food pyramid, children learn about the healthiest foods, as well as how many servings of these foods they need daily. Exercise is also a focus so children will grow up making the important connection between healthy eating and physical activity.

Other Tools

The food pyramid for children is represented in posters, games, coloring pages and worksheets published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for individual and classroom use.

Considerations

My Pyramid for Kids also includes a simplified illustration with easy-to-read text for parents and educators to use as a teaching tool for children ages 2 to 5.
