You can tie a karate belt in a number of ways and no one method is the absolute correct way. However you tie your belt, certain aspects should always be the same. The hanging ends of the belt should be the same length and they should drop down from the knot, not up. Make sure the belt is tight enough that it doesn't come loose during training. Practice this tying method and over time it will become second nature, like tying your shoes.

Step 1

Fold your karate belt in half. Take the center of the belt and place it over your naval, in the center of your body. Hold the belt on each side.

Step 2

Wrap the belt around your back. At the back, switch the ends into the opposite hand, then continue bringing them back around to the front of your body.

Step 3

Hold the left side of the belt against your stomach and layer the right side of the belt over the left. Take the end of the belt on your right side and slip it up and under the other pieces of the belt. You should push the right end up and through, so it points toward, your head.

Step 4

Make sure both ends are even and pull them snug.

Step 5

Place the left end of your belt over the right end, and then under and through the loop. Pull tight.

Tips and Warnings

  • The belt should sit above your hips.
